As a niche in all forms of reality representations, Machinima is challenging the notion of the moving image in numerous media contexts, such as video games, animation, digital cinema and virtual worlds. In theory, Machinima is described as signalling the emergence of new media allowing an unrestricted access to the system of cultural exchange and supporting a more democratic process of production and distribution in the media industry.
There appears to be immense potential for filmmakers to capitalise on the growing capabilities of not only traditional game worlds, but new emerging VR/MR techniques to create unprecedented levels of immersion for viewers. Inversely, for VR/MR creators of all media, Machinima-technology may potentially help to mitigate the challenges when integrating narrative into the video gaming paradigm.
